How To Install A Wind Turbine At Home

Renewable energy is now within our reach; thus, switching to green energy is no hassle nowadays. Solar panels, wind turbines are all-powerful equipment that produces clean and renewable energy even on a small scale for the general public’s convenience. If you are thinking of installing a home wind turbine on the roof of your home or in your backyards, this is the best time to buy it. Of course, there will be complications initially, but it’s worth the trouble.

Wind turbines are not much entertained by people living in the suburbs.

But if you live in an area with open fields, it may offer extra benefits during installation and maintenance because wind turbines are huge, and installing them isn’t easy in urban areas or cities.

How do wind turbines work at home?

wind power windmill generators

Residential wind turbines function the same way as Industrial wind turbines with only a difference in size, meaning residential turbines can serve only single property, i.e., your home, whereas huge wind turbines can serve multiple areas or even an industry.

The wind turbines for home useuse a wind power generator that captures naturally occurring wind around the area and convertsconverts it to electrical energy using the aerodynamic force guided by the rotor blades in the turbine. This is how the wind turbine works at home that can produce enough electricity to power all your appliances.

You must fix your wind turbines in areas where maximum wind runs. For most wind turbines, the minimum amount of wind required is 5.5mph. If the wind around your area is lower than this speed, the blades will not spin, generating no electricity

Method to Install Wind Turbine at Home

Before proceeding with the steps, first, understand the wind conditions around your neighborhood. If the area is windy, you can think of installing a wind turbine. If the area does not produce enough wind, your efforts and money for installing a wind turbine will vain. Anyway, follow the below steps to successfully set up or install a wind turbine for your home use.

Step 1: Consider a place for installation, better if it’s in the backyard. Dig a hole of about 9-10ft deep. Once the hole is dug, you can fill it with concrete or cement to submerge the foot of the wind turbine.

Step 2: Now dig a trench from the footing of the wind turbine just near the inverter and force the underground electrical wires in the trench.

Step 3: To pull the electrical wires, you have to fix a 60-foot long monopole. With this, you can pull the wires through the nacelle.

Step 4: Now, pull the threaded wires of the nacelle to the monopole, pull until it is tight enough. Loose wiring may hamper the connection.

Step 5: Now, tie or lock the threaded connections of the nacelle to the monopole with the help of a chain wrench. Make sure the wire connections in the nacelle are intact and not loose from any end.

Step 6: Now, with the help of a chain wrench, fix the tail vane using 2 huge bolts. This will secure the vane for providing stability to the blades.

Step 7: Once the vane is secured, you can mount the wind blades on top of the shaft provided on the nacelle. You might need another hand at this point to hold the blades.

Step 8: While the other person is holding the blades, you can tighten the blades using the reverse threaded bolts. You can do the tightening using the wrench.

Step 9: Take guide wires and run them to the winch and wind tower. With the help of the winch, you can pull the guidewire in the upright position. Now, check if all the underground connections are secured and go ahead with the final step.

Step 10: Once the tower is placed in the upright position, secure it with the help of wrenches, nuts, and bolts. Make sure the blades do not touch the ground in any case.

This is how you can install a wind turbine in your home with a few simple steps. All you need are the right tools to install.

Selection criteria for Residential wind turbine

You might think buying a wind turbine is no big deal, but there are tons of parameters you have to consider before installing the wind turbine for your home. Here are some of the factors that decide the efficiency and utility of a wind turbine at home.

Wind speed

Wind speed is crucial for any wind turbine to operate. If your area does not provide enough wind, ultimately, the amount of energy produced by the wind tower will be less for that day. The wind speed rating is the amount of wind required to operate at peak efficiency. So, wherever you go shopping for wind turbines, make sure the wind speed ratings are low. This is because they are ranked high due to more flexibility in case of home use.

Energy output

This is the most important consideration of all as this is what matters, i.e. how much energy output a wind turbine provides to generate enough electricity for the entire house. Look for wind turbines that offer wattage around 1000W as it is highly efficient to run high-energy appliances such as air conditioners, refrigerators, TV.

You can even opt for 500W, but that will not be as efficient as 1000W; you would only be able to use it for laptop purposes, charging phone, or to light up the bulbs outside your home.

Weight

The wind turbine comes along with the kit, and it will be comparatively heavier. But, you also need to consider the wind turbine alone because it may affect the placement. If you are planning on installing it on the ground, a little heavier turbine can work. But, if you want to install it on the roof, it would require a heavier pole as well to place it. If, in any case, the wind turbine falls off the roof, it would not only damage your property but also cost you more to buy a new pole. Thus, consider buying a lighter turbine to save up your cash and your property as well.

This is all you need to know about installing a wind turbine at your home. Caring about sustainability is a great step so go buy it today and switch to money-saving, much cleaner, and greener energy.
