Flowers are beautiful but what happens to them after a week? They start to wilt and die. That no longer needs to be an issue as I am about to introduce you to the exciting world of fabric flowers guaranteed to last a lifetime if created and cared for properly.
1. Black layered flower
This is a fairly simple design
What you will need:
- Black silk-like material that is highly flammable
- A tea-light candle
- Some pretty pearl beads
- Glue gun
To start cut rounds out of material 16 per flower. Then very carefully burn the outer edge of the round as to give the petal some shape. Then start to layer the petals. Gluing them together as you go. Add the pearl beads in the middle and secure with glue
2. Desert Rose
What you will need
- Material 2 colors
- Needle and thread
For this design, we are going to use a technique called rousing. As the image depicts cut out the rounds then fold them in half and where the two ends meet start stitching add another crescent shape making sure the ends overlap slightly keep going until you come full circle.
Then pull until the shape represents a ruffle. Start folding until you see and the emergence of a rose.
3. Ruffled satin flower
What you will need
- Scissors
- Lighter
- Needle and thread
- Material
- Small satin circle
Cut the material into strips fold strips in half and then start stitching the open ends together. Lightly burn the outer edge of the material strips to give them more shape.
As you stitch you should start to see a natural ruffle start to form start rousing to create a puffed look. Start to twist the strip round so it goes end to end and the small satin cut out to the middle of your completed flower, adds some beads for that realistic look.
4. Hand-sewn flower
This is all hand sewn
What you will need:
- Two types of mesh material
- Needle and thread
Cut out the star shape flowers using two different sized templates.
Layer in the various colors. Layer until you are happy with the size.
With your thumb and forefinger hold your bundle together start stitching through the middle until all parts are secured.
5. Easily rolled Muslin roses
What you will need:
- Strips of muslin cloth
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun
- Glue sticks
This is easy, knot one end of the muslin cloth then start twisting until a tight cigar shape is formed. Start to roll in on itself and glue whilst you go
6. Five-minute flowers
What you will need
- Needle and thread
- Diamond cut out of fabric
How to start to fold the diamond shape in half. Fold in half again. Turn it around so that you are holding the open ends towards you make as many as you want and start sewing them together.
7. Basic small flower
What you will need:
- Small flower cut-outs
- Needle and thread
So you have the basic shape but it lacks definition… how do you fix that?
Well sewn a line above each petal and pull tight. Problem solved.
8. Felt flower cut-outs
What you will need:
- Felt cut-outs
- Scissors
- Needle and thread
Using scissors cut a hole in the middle of the flower felt. Stitch around the cut-out hole. Pull tight
9. Felt and button flowers
What you will need:
- Felt cut-outs Various sizes and colors
- Pink and white buttons
- Needle and thread
Layer the felt cut-outs until you are satisfied with their size, put the button in the middle and put the needle through the one eye-hole making sure you go through all the layers. Do it again coming back through.
10. Felt flower bustle
What you will need:
- Felt flower cut-outs
- Silver or gold small round beads
- Hot glue gun
- glue sticks
Layer the felt flowers slightly overlapping each one glue as you go along. When you are happy with the size, add decorative beads on and glue them in the middle to secure.
11. Ribbon flower
What you will need
- Red ribbon
- Scissors
Only two items are needed for this craft. Take the ribbon and start to wrap it tightly around your hand. When you have a medium-sized ball tie a knot in it take your scissors
and cut through all the ribbon pieces.
12. Tee- shirt pom pom flower
Find an old Tee-shirt and cut it into strips. Wrap strips around your non dominant hand until a medium-sized ball is formed. Tie a knot around the ball pull tight. Take scissors and cut down the sides of all the layers.
13. The flower loom
This is just another technique that is used that I thought was relevant. This piece of equipment comes in handy when you are making bigger more abstract flowers.
14. rolled rose
What you will need
- Any type of fabric
- Scissors
- Hot glue
- Rolling stick
Tie a knot at the one end of the material twist the est until a cigar shape is formed. Roll in onto itself gluing as you go along. Use the stick to help form tight rolls.
15. pretty yellow flower
What you will need:
- Marker pen
- Scissors
- Needle and thread
- Yellow silky fabric-f
So draw the pansy template on the yellow fabric and cut it out. Do not separate the two completely. Once you have a strip of the pattern start sewing them together.
