Last minute Valentine's day ideas

Last Updated on January 9, 2019 by Kimberly Crawford

Next to Christmas, anniversaries, and birthdays, Valentine’s Day is probably the most stressful 24 hours of the year.

Forgetting your special someone on this day can leave you out in the cold faster than you can come up with a good enough alibi. But you don’t need to worry. If you haven’t picked up something by now, or if you’re still searching for something new and unique, look no further.

Here are 10 last minute ideas that will, if not dazzle your special someone, will at least keep you inside where it’s warm. Each one of these projects is quick and easy as well as economical to make. Your kids won’t have any trouble helping out. To keep costs down, you can bypass those expensive, long-stemmed red roses and opt for the short-stemmed variety instead.

Where to Buy Your Supplies

Affordable chocolates and candy are available at drug stores and local stores during February and you can pick up inexpensive flowers at the grocery store.

#1. Love in a Vase

You many not be a poet but you can find a lot of poems to print out on the internet or photocopy from books from the library. Try to find one that is a favorite of your Valentine’s.

Materials

  • 1 dozen short-stemmed roses
  • Vase (glass, metal, or china – search through your kitchen cupboards for a suitable container)
  • Paper for printing or photocopying
  • Printed or photocopied poem
  • White craft glue

Instructions

  1. Clean the vase thoroughly with warm water and soap..
  2. Print out a suitable poem on pretty paper (or have it photocopied). Cut out and glue to the vase using the craft glue.
  3. To prepare the roses, remove most of the leaves, and then cut 1mm off each stem. Use the hammer to crush the stem ends flat (this allows more water to be absorbed and makes the flower last longer). If the flowers are tightly closed, place the flowers in warm water to open them up.
  4. Fill the vase with warm water and the flower food that is provided with the flowers.
  5. Place the flowers where your sweetie will spot them.

#2. Valentine Place Setting Ornament

Recycle a Christmas clear glass ornament or if you don’t have any, use a small clear glass jar such as a baby food jar. Ask neighbors if you don’t have any of your own.

Materials

  • Clear glass Christmas tree ball (or use small glass jar such as a baby food jar)
  • Valentine’s Day candy or chocolates
  • 15 cm ribbon (red or a favorite color)
  • Small photo of loved one

Instructions

This is a nice idea for a Valentine’s Day dinner and doesn’t involve a single rose!

  1. Half fill the ball or jar with candy and place a photo inside.
  2. Tie the ribbon in a bow around the neck of the ball or jar and place on a plate setting or paper doily.
  3. If you are having guests, you can make one such ornament for each place setting (ask guests to bring a photo of themselves and then discretely place the photos into each ball or jar).
