Any home you visit now, you will spot a wooden crate or two. They are both functional and stylistic in their appearance. They are great for providing extra storage space in the ever-smaller homes that are in the market. The only drawback is that they come in one size. What if you want to be different? In this article, we explore some DIY ideas for wooden crates.
How to make a wood crate?
For a decent sized crate that will give you ample storage space, the measurements are 30 cm X 45 cm. To get you started, below are the materials that you need:
- A pencil
- Measuring tape
- 4 – 30 cm planks
- 13- 45 cm planks
- A hammer
- 1-inch staples and wood glue
Start by making the ends. Join 2 of the 30cm planks using wood glue and fasten them with staples. Allow the glue to set for about 4 hours to ensure that the joint is secure.

Once the sides are ready, apply adhesive on one side of either of the ends and hammer the 45 cm planks to them. You should start with the one closest to the base. Allow these to set before you continue with the remaining sides.
Repeat this process for the remaining two sides. Voila, your crate is ready.
What can you make out of wooden crates?
Now that you have your crate, here are some ways you can use them. You can fix them to your kitchen wall to add extra space shelf either in the living room or kitchen. You can also use them as container holders, the slightly smaller crates, for your kitchen.
They can also make magnificent vegetable gardens. All you need to do is line the inside with planting sheeting, add some soil and plant your favourite kitchen vegetables. Coriander, parsley and basil grow very well.
Wood crates also make ideal bedroom benches. If you are into the vintage décor, a wood crate makes a great addition to the bedroom décor. Other ways to use wood crates include bookcases, drawer chests, and so on.
What kind of wood is suitable for crates?
For older crates, oak is the material. It is a hardwood and very durable. You will find oak crates in vineyards and fruit farms. The other wood used is Southern Yellow Pine. Most DIY wooden crates use southern yellow pine given its cheap cost and ready availability. Plywood is also an alternative to either of the above.
What size is a wooden crate?
Wooden crates come in a variety of sizes, depending on the intended purpose. They range from 33cm X 19cm X 10cm used for encasing wines to 45 cm X 30 cm X 24 cm used for commercial warehousing. Depending on how much storage you want, you will find a crate size to suit you.
