Natural stone, a chiseled stone vessel sink and rustic lighting are components of rustic or Tuscan bathroom design. Home rustic décor now continues inside the bathroom.
Homeowners with log cabins or homes in rustic or wooded settings may want to emphasize the rustic details of the home in every area, including the bathroom design.
Homeowners who enjoy the natural materials and warm colors of the Tuscan home may also want to consider extending the look into their bathroom. For all of these reasons, the rustic bathroom design can enhance the look and feel of the home design.
Rustic and Tuscan Bathroom Tiles
To enhance the rustic décor of the bathroom, natural stone tiles and rustic, handmade terra cotta tiles are key. Tumbled stone, slate tiles and ancient styled textured wall tiles lend a worn, soft texture to the bathroom design. Accompanying this look is the rich natural colors and details that the natural stone tiles bring.
Handmade, and hand painted terra cotta tiles in rich, warm colors can also be used to help enhance a Tuscan bathroom design. For heavily used bathrooms, where natural stone may not be desirable, glazed terra cotta tiles can bring much of the soft, textured look with less maintenance.
For rustic bathrooms in wooded settings or log cabins, consider using ungauged slate tiles throughout the bathroom design. Slate tiles will range in color, thickness and texture from piece to piece and within one piece, lending a multi-dimensional look to the bathroom. Slate tiles also wear extremely well, and hide dirt abuse making them perfect for high traffic bathrooms.
Use a light, warm colored stone like Desert Gold throughout the bathroom, or use a darker stone on the bathroom floor, such as Rustic Yellow, with a tumbled marble or handmade ceramic tile on the walls for an eclectic look.
Tuscan bathrooms can make use of light colored, warm toned travertines and limestones, such as Jerusalem Gold, Giallo Mediterraneo and Travertine Noce throughout the bathroom design. Use multiple sizes of the same colored stone to achieve movement and detail without making the design appear too busy.

Rustic and Tuscan Bathroom Vanities and Sinks
The vessel sink is one of the standout areas of the Tuscan and rustic bathroom design. Stone sinks, either carved out of a large round stone and left in its natural finish on the outside, or hand chiseled with a polished interior not only bring additional natural detail to the room, they help to conjure the look and feel of running water with a wall mounted faucet.
Vessel sinks made of metal, such as hammered, patinaed bronze or copper also work well in a rustic or Tuscan bathroom, as the metal helps add an additional detail to the room and makes a nice contrast to the natural stone.
Mount a vessel sink on either a wrought iron pedestal, or on top of a rustic bathroom vanity. Bathroom cabinet makers will often offer rustic vanity styles, with shaker or bead board doors that have been painted and then hand worn and sanded for a soft, old look. Some types of hardwood, such as pine will also have knot holes or pin holes in their surface, enhancing the natural look.
Mount the faucet on the wall above the sink, and finish the faucet in a rustic, patinaed finish in copper or bronze, to keep the warm tones of the bathroom consistent.
Rustic Lighting
Many lighting manufacturers will offer wall scones and bathroom lighting with a worn, rustic finish. This is done by placing the metal components of the sconce into a drum with other chunks of metal, pieces of cement and stone and tumbling them. This pits the metal, leaving unique marks on each piece.
The sconce is then finished with a rich color such as oil rubbed bronze, dark copper or dark, natural bronze. Adding rustic wall sconces to the room in the same metal finish as the faucet, shower valves and door knobs will complete the rustic bathroom design with the right amount of detail.
Keep the wall colors of the bathroom design consistent with both the colors of the tile, and the colors used in the rest of the home for a truly cohesive look. Consider the use of Venetian plaster or a faux finish to add further texture and detail to the room in a subtle manner.
