Origami is an ancient Japanese, art form that involves folding paper. Among the most popular choices is paper flowers. In this article we will explore this ancient art, and also offer up tips and advice on how best to achieve your goal with this fun, and playful craft.
1. Beginners flower
What you will need:
- A template with petal shapes
- hard colored stock board
- glue
- scissors
Draw the petal shape on your stock board, we chose a light blue for this design. Cut out the petals and cut a slit in the tapered end of the petal. Slightly fold the larger end of the petal to represent the natural cure of the flower. Start with the larger petal shapes and start slotting them together, continue until you have the full flower shell. Do the same with the small petals and glue the two together.
2. Star fruit flower
What you will need
- White stock board
- Colored stock board
For this flower there is no cutting or glue; this is just a clever folding technique. Just follow the instructions on the image and you will soon be making these flowers like a pro!
3. White rose
What you will need:
- White stock board
- pre-cut petals and bases
This one is pretty standard, just follow the instructions on the image. The petals must be various sizes as well as the bases and the flower base that start this whole pattern.

5. Paper flower hanging balls
what you will need
- Polystyrene ball
- Four petal punch
- Glue-gun
- Different stock board
Punch out as many petal shapes as you can, this look requires layers start applying to the polystyrene ball and keep going until you have one layer that has covered the ball. Keep going until you have your desired look.
6. Cherry blossom tree
What you will need
- Wooden hoop Size up to you
- Soft pliable wire
- brown strong wool or twine
- Small flower punch
- Pink stock board
- glue gun
Start by making the tree trunk and branches, by wrapping the twine around the wire until you have covered all the wire. Punch out the flower cut-outs and start attaching to the branches and attach tree into the wooden hoop by gluing the strands of twine to the base of the hoop.
7. Cupcake Flower ball
This is an unique Idea.
What you will need:
- White cupcake wrappers 24-48 depending on the ball size
- polystyrene ball
- string
- glue gun
- dowel stick
Take the cupcake wrapper and slightly fold to give the paper some dimension. Glue the closed end of the cupcake wrapper to the polystyrene ball and use the dowel stick to position where you want it. Repeat this action until the ball is fully covered and use string to hang if desired.
8. Book lovers wreath
This is for all those spare books, that you don’t know what to do with them.
What you need:
- Assortment of books
- Plastic or polystyrene wreath
- Glue gun
Cut the paper from the books into strips, twist and roll it onto itself and once you have a rufflette rose start gluing to the wreath and keep going until the entire surface of the wreath is covered.
9. Lantern with paper flowers
what you will need
- Chinese style paper lantern
- some Black paint
- small paper flower punch
- Red stock board
- Glue gun
Flatten the lantern and first draw your tree design on the lantern. Once you are happy with your design paint it on in black. Leave the paint to dry. Whilst the paint is drying start with the cut-outs and fold each flower slightly to give dimension. Once paint is dry start attaching flowers until you are satisfied with the look
10. Easy Dahlia
What you will need
- two colors of stock card
- tape measure
- scissors
- glue gun
Start by drawing your base circle that you will attach the cone shapes to. Cut out diamond shapes from the pink stock board
make your first cone and start gluing to give the flower more dimension, cut the second layer of cones slightly smaller to get that realistic effect.
11. Dahlia nr 2
What you will need
- Petal cut outs 28-48 depending on size
- stock board x 2 colors
- glue gun
Cut the petals using a template. Glue onto the base diameter
Cut more petals slightly smaller and glue to first layer , don’t glue flat down as you need dimension repeat at least 3 times to get the desired look

13. Paper Lotus Flower
This is again the Japanese art for Origami
what you will need
- Rubber band
- 2 different card stock

14. Peony flower
What you will need
- Stock board
- Scissors
Using a template or punch, cut out the basic flower shape slightly to fold to give dimension cut slits and start slotting together.
15. Simplistic petal flower
What you will need
- Large flower cut outs
- Small star/ Dahlia cut outs
- 2 colored stock board
- scissors
Cut out large flower shapes 2 different sizes, cut out Dahlia style flowers and star gluing
